Ostrya virginiana (Mill.) K. Koch
- Small to medium-sized understory tree features a rounded crown and oval-shaped, yellow-green foliage with serrate margins. April blooms are not particularly showy, but female catkins are followed by pendulous clusters of sac-like, seed-bearing pods which resemble the fruit of hops.
- Reaches 25-40 feet tall.
- Drought tolerant. Full sun to partial shade exposure.
